  • SEEHEIM - 2 July 2014 - The Naute Dam in southern Namibia is the third largest dam in the dry arid country. Built between 1970 and 1972, when Namibia was still called South West Africa and under the control of neighbouring South Africa, the dam provides water to a fruit farm and is the site of a fishery. The vessel is owned by the German shipping company NSC Holding GmbH & Cie. KG which is based in the North Sea port of Hamburg. The vessel is 231 metres long and has a beam of 32.2 metres. Fully laden it can carry 3534 standard 20 foot containers or 1741 standard 40 foot containers. It has a Gross Tonnage of 35998 tons and DeadWeight of 41974  tons. The beach was one of four that was closed to the public by the eThekwini Metro Municipality after medical waste was found in amongst the rubbish that had come ashore following storms that occurred two weeks earlier.   Medical waste that was found on  Blue Lagoon Beach next to the mouth of the Umgeni River a few kilometres south of this beach. The medical waste that sprked the closures consited primarily of tablets and  sealed standard government issue condoms. The city's main tourist beaches are a mere five kilometres from this point. Concerned that surfers or swimmers might be injured by the car wreck, one local surfer (who declined to be named) and fellow surfer Dr Mark Rudel (right) hammer a pole into the sand to warn other water users of the dangers that lurk there, until Invercargill City Council officials have had a chance to get a digger in remove the wreck.
